NYC Man Pleads Guilty to Organ Trafficking

A New York City man named Levy Izhak Rosenbaum has recently pled guilty to three counts of organ trafficking.  Additionally, Mr. Rosenbaum pled guilty to a single count of conspiracy to broker an unlawful kidney sale.  This is the first recorded cased of an organ trafficker being found guilty in the United States.

According to reports, the demand for kidneys is far greater than those which are lawfully available for transplant.  It has been estimated that nearly one quarter of all kidney transplants around the world result from illegal organ harvesting.  Unlike other organs, a human kidney may be harvested from a live subject, which is why so many cash strapped individuals in poorer regions agree to sell their kidneys in exchange for cash. Affordable Care Act Loses CLASS

As the United States copes with massive budget deficits, many individuals are curious if there will actually be funding available for the Affordable Care Act once it becomes an active law.  Further adding to this uncertainty is the loss of CLASS, a key provision in the ACA which was to provide for the long-term care of the elderly, has been recently suspended indefinitely.

According to statistics, nearly one third of all Medicare spending is related to long-term care.  Proponents of the Affordable Care Act view this “indefinite suspension” of CLASS as a major setback, while opponents argue that this is the first of many dominoes to drop.  Regardless of ones position on the issue, the fact remains that those near the end of their lives will not find financial assistance through the Affordable Care Act.
